We had argued about the bill-payments flow for a year. Ishaan asked for two weeks, spent them in people's homes in Hadapsar, and came back with recordings, not opinions.

His prototype was on paper. By the third round our sceptical engineers were suggesting the next change themselves. Completed payments doubled within a month of launch.

The longer version

I drew comics all through school in Nagpur, and chose design school over engineering, which took my parents a year to forgive.

At design school I found I liked the boring screens most: forms, payments, queues, the places where people get stuck and blame themselves. My final project was a queue for a government hospital; a health-tech studio saw it and hired me as an intern.

Now I design payments at a fintech startup in Pune. I run research in the language people think in, sketch on paper first, and stay with the developers until the last screen ships.
